Celebrating the life of Fredrick Law Olmsted

The father of landscape architecture had a hand is shaping the historic Village of Pinehurst.

Best know of his design of Central Park in New York City, Boston Common and the grounds at the Biltmore House, Frederick Law Olmstead was hired by the Tufts family in 1895 to design the outdoor spaces we enjoy today in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina.

"The park should, as far as possible, complement the town."

"A grateful sense of peculiarly fresh and pure air."

"Openness is the only thing you cannot get in buildings."

"Nothing of the bustle and jar of the streets."

"Life is to be more than the meat."

"The enjoyment of scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it"
